Who we are

Established in 1824, the Brown Debating Union is the 2nd oldest debating organisation in the United States.

We are a club located on Brown University’s campus and can be found on weekends competing at various competitions domestically and internationally.

In 2023/24, the BDU were National Finalists and finished #2 team in in the American Parliamentary Debate circuit, APDA.

We also compete in various other formats including British Parliamentary. On campus, we hold collaborative events with other clubs and local organisations.

Annually, the BDU hosts the Hicks competition which is a 1v1 debate tournament exclusively featuring Brown students; it is judged by professors and other faculty.

Importantly, we are a ‘no-cuts’ team and encourage anyone with or without debate experience to consider joining the team. Above all, we care about fostering a fun and supportive space to encourage students’ social and intellectual growth via debate.
